Interpretation, Evolution: Artists’ Journey”

The Langley Centennial Museum & National Exhibition Centre (NEC)
is collaborating with the Fort Langley Artists Group (FLAG) to celebrate
the dynamic, symbiotic relationship between artists in a group since
its inception in 1993. Prominent community artists will take you on
a journey through discussions and demonstrations of their painting,
sculpting, and drawing. The sessions will be held in the NEC Gallery

Fri. Nov. 2 Margo Harrison, Linda Muttitt, Barbara Boldt
2D-Painting and Mixed Media Session: Margo Harrison
will focus on exploration. You will hear and see how her work has evolved
as she interpreted different themes using a variety of media from watercolour
to mixed media to photography. Included in her presentation will be
a demonstration on how to do a photo transfer.
Linda Muttitt will take you on a journey through her creative process
and present an honest look into both the joys and challenges she has
experienced as an artist. She will open up discussion on what moves
artists to create and how her own passions for nature have allowed her
watercolours to develop. With humour and insight, this session will
inspire you to find your own creative voice and to express, in an artistic
way, what is most precious to you.
Barbara Boldt, now at age 77, has supported herself with her art since
1980 and continues to teach and host two "Open Houses" annually
featuring her new original works in oil, soft pastel, and watercolour.
You will find out what moves her, excites her, and humbles her in Nature
and how life experiences have influenced her choice of art subjects.
Fri. Nov. 9 Blair Howatt, Linda Muttitt Merging
of Image & Text: Illustrating and Journaling Session: Have
you ever thought of being able to have your art used as illustrations
for a book in some form but, found this task too daunting to even attempt?
Would you like to be able to self-publish your work in a few books to
give to family and friends?
Blair Howatt is a local artist well known for his Langley Good Times
Cruise-In posters—a merger of text and images. Blair creates everything
from fine watercolor paintings to playful cartoons and caricatures.
He will discuss how the bold use of colour, shading, detail, and the
powerful impact of perspective make an image pop off the page.
Linda Muttitt will share her personal art journals and discuss how process
painting and journaling can free up individual creativity. Through her
journals, Linda will show many different approaches to expressing and
connecting ideas and images, thoughts and feelings. She will discuss
how her journals follow the path of her own growth and have been the
vehicle through which many innovative ideas have evolved. How can journals
help expand your own creative expression? Experience one artist's look
into the world of connecting writing with art in both playful and serious
reflection.
Fri. Nov. 16 Margo Harrison, Beverly Lawrence, Dianne Wilson
3D-Sculpture and Pottery Session: It is more than just talk.
Clay artists from FLAG will reveal the secrets behind the three-dimensional
work in the exhibition. They will present entertaining and informative
demonstrations on: (a) hand building a small mural (Dianne Wilson),
(b) designing and making a container for an Ikebana flower arrangement
(Beverly Lawrence), and (c) starting a clay sculpture (Margo Harrison).
How is it made? What inspired you? Has your work changed? Not only will
they explain the process and answer questions, the artists will also
take you on a guided tour of the displayed pottery and sculptures.
