CAROLINE ASHLEY Whilst Winnipeg born artist Caroline Ashley is inspired by the great impressionists such as Claude Monet, her portfolio immediately reveals a distinct and passionate admiration for the work of American master, Georgia O’Keefe. Many of Caroline’s close up flower studies strongly emulate O’Keefe’s revolutionary style.
Caroline, who now lives and creates in Langley, British Columbia is a Fine Arts graduate of the University of Manitoba. Aware of her artistic inclinations from a very young age, she was strongly encouraged by her Grandparents and her High School art teacher, to create the work that took her into undergraduate study. Indeed, it was her teacher who pushed her to stretch far beyond that which she felt capable of, to see the world around her through artist’s eyes, to see color where most people see none and, as with many accomplished artists, to appreciate even the tiniest things in life.Following her university honors, Caroline initially focused upon art for children, such as the images of Teddy bears she created, one of which appeared in a national publication.
However, Caroline’s art very soon moved in the direction it now lies firmly rooted; that of nature, and more frequently, the created environments of landscaped gardens etc. This work is filled with color that wakes your mind to the joy of life, whilst also offering a moment of serenity in this busy world. Her preferred media of acrylic is ideally suited to such work, allowing for a distinct visual vibrancy and stunningly crisp clarity with which an artist such as Caroline can both capture that which is real, whilst simultaneously drawing a breath of often stunned appreciation from her audience. Caroline also works often with a pen and ink stippling technique which, whilst also capturing the inherent beauty of her natural subject, layers her images with a connotation of both dreams, and times past.
Each of Caroline Ashley’s paintings works its own individual magic to add a little piece at a time to the beauty of our world. Her work makes no statements, no attempt to convince; there is no rhetoric, merely beauty. It is obvious that she has a deep love for that which she captures in paint. Caroline will tell you that she paints for herself first. I will tell you that, looking through her portfolio today, this artist paints for all of us.
Her distinctive work can be found in private collections internationally.
